 벤처 기업의 열풍이 불고 있는 지금 조금이라도 창업에 관심이 있다면, 한 벤처기업의 탄생 과정과 성공, 불화, 정치 등의 이야기를 전문적이고 사실적으로 묘사한 이 책은 필독서이다.  저자는 탁월한 필력으로 7백여쪽에 달하는 방대한 내용을 전혀 지루하지 않게 서술하고 있으며 방대한 자료 조사를 통해 객관성과 현실감을 더하고 있다.
(If you have any tiny interest of making own company in this boom of venture company era, I highly recommend to you this book which professionally and realistically describes a story of birth, success, discord, and politics of venture company.  Author takes us to around 700 pages journey without any boring and adds objectivity and a sense of reality through extensive data research.)

이렇게 생긴 트레일러에서 고등학생이 혼자 생활했다는 것인데 그들의 독립성과 이를 관철하는 행동력에 정말 감탄을 했다.

 첫 장에서 그리고 책을 덮기까지 계속 놀랐던 점 중 하나는 팔머 럭키가 트레일러에서 생활했다는 점이다. 물론 어렴풋이 미국의 문화 중 자식이 성인이 되면 독립을 시킨다는 점은 알고 있었으나 그게 트레일러일줄이야..
책에서 트레일러에서의 생활이 팔머에게 자유를 주었다고 언급을 하나 여러 의문과 찝찝함이 여전히 남아다. 그러나 이와는 상관없이 트레일러의 생활이 팔머에게 자기 관심사에 온전히 집중할 수 있는 여건을 마련해준 것은 틀림없어 보인다. 역시 자유는 경제적 독립으로부터 오는 것을 알수있다. 
( One of the surprising thing from first page until the end is that Palmer luckey stayed at the trailer house. Of course, I superficially know that the independence culture of America which is as soon as the kids being an adult then they start to live alone though. But I never think the trailer house.
In the book, he said that the trailer gave him freedom, although I feel still leery. Anyway, It was clear that life in trailer brought him special atmosphere that fully focused on what he really like. From here, I found ,one more time, that liberty comes from economic independent. )

 책을 읽으면서 느낀 이 책이 주는 가장 중요한 부분은 바로 끊임없이 한 가지에 몰두하는 것의 중요성이라고 생각한다. 팔머는 사회의 기준으로는 패배자이다. 대학도 나오지 않았으며 트레일러에 살고 있으며, 제대로 된 직업도 없다. 그러나 VR이 정말 너무 좋았고 제대로 된 VR 기계를 만들고 싶다는 열정과 욕망이 VR 기계를 정말 전문가 수준으로 파고 들 수 있게 만들었으며 최신 기계를 확보하기 위해 여러 아르바이트를 병행하는 고단함을 감수 할 수 있을 정도로 '몰입'하여 그 시절을 보냈다.
( What I was thinking while I read this book, is that the importance of concentration on something continuously. Actually, Palmer was looser in social standards. He didn't graduate university, live in the trailer, and even have regular job. But he really falls love into VR techniques. And, desire to develop proper VR machine leads him to specialist in that field. Also he spent so dense and precious time so that he could endure the bunch of part time jobs for buying the latest devices. )

 이러한 몰입과 열정을 가지고 사는 사람이 몇이나 있을까?
나에게는 이 책이 나 같은 공학자들에게 매우 희망적인 동화처럼 다가온다. 내가 정말 순수하게 몰두 할 수있는 기술 분야가 있고 내가 그 분야에 큰 기여를 하고 있으며 그로부터 엄청난 부가 부수적으로 들어온 이야기 말이다.
( How many people experience that kind of passions and flow?
For me, this story seems like really hopeful fairy tale for engineers. Such a story that I can purely concentrate on some technical fields. Also my work contributes that fields and even earns enormous money.)

공학과 연구가 좋아 연구원으로 생활하고 있지만 여전히 이처럼 열정적으로 몰입해본 기억이 희미하다. 그럴때면 어김없이 '이 일이 내 적성에 정말로 맞는 것인가? 그저 어렷을 때부터 이어온 관성이 벗어나지 못하게 옮아매고 있는 것은 아닌가 생각하게 만든다. 물론 내 성격이 어느정도 무덤덤하고 잔잔하긴 하다.
( It is hard to recall such a passionately immersed memory, even though I have been living a researcher cause I like engineering and studying. From this question, I think 'Is this really the right job for me?' or, 'is this because childhood inertia ties me up so that I couldn't move on other fields?' Of course I'm a little placid person though. )

 다시 책으로 돌아와서 팔머는 인터넷을 통해서 최고 프로그래머 중 한 명인 존 카맥을 만나게 되고 이리브와 같은 창업 동료를 만난다. 여기서 또 다시 21세기 기술 발전으로 인한 초연결 사회의 특성이 나타난다. 나와 물리적으로 떨어진 사람이 기술을 통해 연결되고 그룹이 형성되며 이전에는 상상도 못할 어마어마한 시너지를 만들어 낸다. 이러한 인연이 없었다면 팔머는 자기 만족에 그쳤거나 혹은 체험 키트를 판매하는 정도에서 멈췄을지 모른다. 또한 이러한 연결 사회는 한명의 개인이 만들어내는 영향력을 무한대로 확장시킨다. 예전에는 연예인 혹은 운동선수에게만 볼수 있던 일종의 '셀럽'의 성격이 대부분의 직업군에서 나타나게 된다.
( Back to the book, Palmer got the chance to meet one of the top programmer, 'John D. Carmack', through the internet. And also met 'Brendan Iribe' who is the start-up member and mentor. Here again, we can find the characteristics of hyper-connected society due to technology development in the 21 century.  We can be easily connected with somebody who are physically stayed far away from me. And this kind of networks derive amazing synergy which never can be thinking before. How can Palmer start the company without this networks? If there was no relationship like that, then he might just sell demo-kit on the internet or stay in self-satisfaction. Also networks enhance the influence of independence to infinity. In the past, there is only entertainer or sports player can be called 'celebrities' but now in anybody can be. )

 제목에 "잔혹한 동화"라고 언급한 이유는 책의 마지막 챕터인 '정치' 떄문이다. 스타트업이 커지면서 인수가 되거나 외부 자금을 받게 되면 필연적으로 초기의 열정과는 다른 이해관계가 발생하게 된다. 이해관계와 돈 문제, 정치 등이 얽히면서 내부와 외부에서 발생하는 소음은 성인이 된 후에는 정말 철 없는 순수함에서 나오는 인관 관계는 없어지게 되는구나 생각하게 된다. 물론 '과거에 사귀었던 친구 관계가 어른이 되어 사귀게 되는 인간관계보다 더 낫으냐'는 질문에는 '그렇다'고 말할 수는 없을꺼 같다. 그럼에도 과거의 순수했던 나를 그리워하는 감정이 '정치' 챕터를 조금 더 씁쓸하게 느끼게 하지 않았나 생각한다.
( Because of last chapter 'politics',  I put 'heartless fairy tale' in the title. Unwanted interest issue could be occurred when the start-up is merged or invested large money. The intertwining of interests, money problems, politics, and so on, makes one think that after adulthood, the relationships that come from innocence are really gone. Course, I can't answer the question that "Is the Childhood relationship more valuable than adult one?" I reckon that my nostalgia makes me feel more bitter in that chapter.  )


 마지막으로 '페이스북'과 같은 커다란 플랫폼이 가지는 무서움을 느꼈다. 어마어마한 정보가 발생하는 인터넷 공간에서 빅데이터를 바탕으로 편향된 정보를 은연중 흘리게 되고 같은 플랫폼 내부에서 동조하는 분위기가 생겼을 때 과연 사람들은 올바른 정보를 얻고 판단을 내릴 수 있을까? 트럼프의 당선에 결정적인 역할을 한 것이 다름아닌 개인정보와 빅데이터를 바탕으로한 선전 방식이 있었음을 '넷플릭스의 거대한 해킹'에서 볼 수 있듯이 현 시대에서 거대한 플랫폼이 얼마나 무섭게 변모할 수 있는지 다시한번 느낄 수 있었다.
( Finally, I felt fear the power of multi-platform such as 'Facebook'. How could we correctly make a decision while implicitly get the certain biased information based on our personal data from internet? 'Great Hack' in 'Netflix' programs shows the key of 'Trump' election is the way of propagation based on personal information and big-data. One more time, I found how that kind of platform can be an arms. )
