06. 모두 거짓말을 한다(Everybody lies)

구글은 모든 것을 알고 있다

(Google knows everything)

 빅데이터의 위력을 유쾌하게 풀어낸 책이다. 작가는 학계에서 거들떠보지도 않았던 구글 데이터를 사용하여 사람들의 심리를 명확하게 파악하는 연구를 진행하였고 이를 정리하여 책으로 엮어냈다. 당연히 내용은 가히 자극적일 수 밖에 없다. 우리 모두 인터넷에 개인적인 질문, 생각 등을 많이 검색하지 않았던가? 

( The author explains the power of 'Big-data' in a humorous way. He has studied the human psychology for many years and he established his own insights of that by employing Google data information. Which was treated as just funny data in the academic world, therefore he compiled his novel researches as this book. So the contents should be attractive. Because, you would have the experience to google your personal questions, or thinking; having them responded instantly, within seconds. )

남여의 글자 사용 빈도이다. 딱 봐도 남여를 고를 수 있을꺼 같다.(The frequently used words of man and woman. You can pick the man's figure without explanation. "Graph visualized words, phrases, and topics most highly distinguishing females and males.¹ ")

 우리는 모두 어느정도 거짓말을 하고 산다는 것은 누구나 동의할 것이다. 그러나 생각보다 자주 하고 있는 것 같다. 사실 아무리 익명성을 보장하는 설문조사를 하더라도 왠지 모르게 좋게만 작성해야 할 꺼 같은 부끄러운 감정이 든다.

( There is something we all know as a fact, and that is "We all lie". But it shows that we do more than our actually thinking. Honestly, it makes me feel bad that I have to answer this anonymous questionnaire in a good way.)

 한창 트럼프가 대선에 있었고 당선이 되었을 때 상당히 놀랐던 기억이 있다. 분명 미국은 엄청난 다양성의 국가이고 이전 대통령이 최초의 흑인 대통령이였 던 상황인데 어떻게 인종차별주의자가 당선이 될 수 있었을까? 아직도 인종차별이 그토록 심한 것인가? 구글은 '그렇다' 라고 말해준다. 

( I have some shocking memories when the 'Trump' got elected as a president of USA. As I know the USA is seriously one of the most diverse country in the world. They even had African-American president before, so in that case how could they even be racist? My final question was, is the USA a racist country? The Google data says 'Yes'. The most diverse a country is the more racism exists. )

인종차별 설문조사² 아무리 익명이라도 이런 질문에 yes라고 당당히 답변 할 수 있을까? (Racist attitude questionnaire, Although they guarantee anonymity, How could we answer squarely to yes?)

 책에서 소개된 연구 내용 중에 <소셜 애니멀>에 나왔던 문화, 환경의 힘에 관한 직접적인 연구 결과가 있다. 가난한 지역의 사람들은 더욱 가난해지고 벗어나기 힘든 반면 부유한 사람들이 많이 사는 지역에 사는 사람들은 계층 이동이 더욱 쉽게 이루어 질 수 있다. 이는 경제적 여건뿐만 아니라 건강에도 직결된다. 또한 다양한 인종이 사는 곳에서 아이들이 주목할 만한 성공을 거두는 비율이 높아진다. (문화적 다양성의 힘이다. 이것이 미국의 가장 강력한 무기 중 하나였는데 트럼프와 그 지지자들의 행보는 역행하고 있지 않은가?)

( Among the studies introduced in the book, there is a direct study on the power of culture and environment in the book <Social Animal>. People in poor areas become poorer and harder to get out of, while people living in rich areas can be more easily moved to a higher class. It's not only about economic problems, but also about their health. Children with a diverse ethnic group have a higher chance to become outstanding in all aspects in the future. Due to expose of different language, customs, upbringing, and so on. (This is power of the culture variety. It is one of the biggest advantage of USA, but recent day's they set back the clock because of Trump and his followers.) )

  또한 저자는 포르노 사이트의 데이터를 연구에 사용하였다.(솔직히 매우 대단하다고 생각한다. 아무리 성에 관해 연구를 하려고 했다지만 어떻게 포르노 사이트 데이터를 쓸 생각을 했을까?) 설문조사에서는 미국 내 게이의 비율이 약 2~3%라고 나오지만 실제 포르노 사이트 연구를 통해 나온 비율은 대략 5%로 추정된다. 이는 매우 큰 차이이며 한편으로는 우리가 솔직하지 못하다는 것을 반증하는 결과가 아닐까? (최근 한국에서 이태원 클럽 사건으로 게이에 대한 혐오가 늘어가고 있다. 박애주의, 다양성, 인권 등의 내용을 내려놓고 단순히 숫자만 생각했을 때 5%의 수치는 혐오를 통해 대립하고 무시하기에는 너무나 많은 수치가 아닌가? 이번 사건은 특정 집단의 잘못이라기 보다 코로나에 대해 우리가 너무나 안일하게 마음을 놓고 있었던게 아닌가 다시 한번 생각해봐야 할 계기가 되었다고 생각한다.)

( And author used the porn website data for his studying. (Honestly, I have never read a  book where someone talks about porn to gain data. Because, we think, especially in academic fields, porn data as obscene and untrustworthy. How could he think to employ that data, even though he studied this subject throughout his career. He is very unusual. ) The regular questionnaire showed the percentage of gay in the USA as around 2 ~ 3%. But the latest study using porn website data said it's around 5%. The gap between studies revealed that we are not really honest, even in the anonymous questionnaire. (Recent day, because of 'Iteawon' club happening, the hate speech to gay is increasing. Except the philanthropy, a variety of gender, and human rights, just think about the number, isn't the 5% of total too large to ignore or hate? This happening is not the fault of specific groups and we should reflect on ourselves that we think easily nowadays during the Corona virus pandemic situations.) )

이 시국에 클럽이라니. 솔직히 반성해야한다.³ (How could they go to club at this moment! They should reflect on their behaviors)

  

 이처럼 빅데이터는 우리도 모르는 우리들을 적나라게 보여주고 있다. 물론 단순히 데이터가 많기만 하면 되는 것은 아니다. 그러나 다양하고 적절한 데이터와 이를 다루는 기술, 특히 AI기술이 이를 핸들링 한다면 엄청난 시너지 효과를 불러올 수 있다. 어느 순간부터 유튜브, 넷플릭스가 추천해주는 알고리즘이 너무나 취향저격이지 않은가? 나에게 보여지는 광고가 딱 필요한 것을 제시해주지는 않던가? 이미 많은 곳에서 활용하고 있다.

( Like this, 'Big-data' has disclosed our nature thinking, and behaviors. Of course, the point is not the amount of data. But if advanced techniques, such as AI, handle the proper Big-data, then it can bring about enormous synergy in the future. In some moment, Isn't this so attractive that the recommendation algorithm in Netflex, or Youtube? Does the advertisements suggest the optimal items? The 'Big-data' is already used in our daily life.)

 우리의 본능, 심리 등에 대한 연구가 활발히 되었고 빅데이터가 가미되면서 보다 정교하게 사람을 이해하는 모델들이 개발되고 있다. <생각에 관한 생각>에서 설명하듯이 우리는 생각보다 이성적이지 않다. 충분히 우리의 행동을 예측하고, 이용할 수 있다. 그렇다면 미래에 AI의 발전과 인간이 디지털 데이터화가 진행된 시점에서 거의 모든 행동이 예측되고 조종 되는 사회가 오지 않을까? 모든 행동이 우리의 자유의지에서 나온 것이라고 어떻게 확신할 수 있을까? 허무맹랑한 소리라고 생각되지만 주변에서 이미 일어나고 있는 여러 일들이 꼭 그 가능성을 보여주고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 

( Researchers have studied our instinct, thinking, and psychology and precisely designed the model, which explains human more accurately, using 'Big-data'. As described in the book <Thinking fast and slow>, we are not really rational. Our behavior is easily predicted and exploited. At the juncture of developing more fancy AI and the possibility to using all of the human data as digital manner, almost of our actions could be predicted and controlled. How could we have convictions to our behaviors that truly caused by our volition? It sounds ludicrous but all of the things already happening show the possibilities. )

우리의 모든 것이 데이터가 되는 시대에는 우리의 행동, 생각 등이 예측되고 조종되지 않을까?⁴ (When the we are becoming the data, Could our actions, and thinking be manipulated and predicted?)

 그렇다면 우리는 어떻게 대처해야 할까? 내가 온전한 자유의지를 지닌 인간으로 존재하려면 어떻게 해야할까? 막연히 끊임없는 학습으로 올바른 가치관, 신념을 세우려고 노력하고, 피드백을 통해 수정하고 깊이 사고하며 살아가면 되는 것일까? 아직은 잘 모르겠다.

( Then, How could we prepare? What should I do to exist as a man of complete free will? Is it right way to live like that just keep studying hard, try to establish correct values and principles and ponder as deeply as possible, and modify those from feedback?  I don't know yet. )
