07. 지식의 반감기(The Half-Life of Facts)

변화하는 지식 그 속에 숨은 규칙

(Changing knowledge. Rule hidden in it)

 반감기란 어떤 물질의 양이 반이 될 때까지 걸리는 시간을 말한다. 그럼 지식의 반감기란 지식의 총량이 반이 되는 시간을 말한다. 조금 이상하다. 여기서 말하는 지식이란 절대 불변의 것이 아니라 인류가 발견해낸 '정보'를 말한다. 인류는 긴 역사 동안 인식의 지평을 넓히면서 발전해 왔다. 그렇게 얻은 '정보'들 중 대다수는 '진실'과는 조금 다르다. 즉, 지식의 반감기란 특정 분야에서 우리가 아는 대부분의 지식은 조금씩 틀린린 것이며 과학이 발전할 수록 그것이 틀렸다고 판명나고 알고 있는 것 중 반정도만 살아남을 때까지 걸리는 시간을 말한다. 

( Half-life is the time when the amount of substance becomes a half. Then half-life of the facts mean the time when the amount of fact becomes a half. This is little strange. The meaning of the fact in here, not a absolute truth but information discovered by human. Human has been developed with extending the horizon of cognition. So, 'knowledge' from our cognition can be different with absolute 'truth'. In other words, half-life of the facts is the time when the half of our knowledge in specific field changes to wrong. )

 우리는 보통 10대부터 20대까지 대략 15년정도를 무엇인가 배우는데 사용한다. 반감기가 길다면 우리가 배운 것들이 아직까지 '사실'이라고 여겨지는 시간이 길고 우리는 그것을 사용하여 일을 할 수 있다. 그러나 불행히도 그렇게 길지 않다. 조금 일이 익숙해졌다 싶을 때면 우리가 배운것들 중 반은 이미 거짓이 되어있을 수 있다. 즉, 어찌됐든 평생교육의 시대가 왔다. 

( Usually, we spend around 15 years to learn something when we are teenagers to twenties. If the half-life is long, we still have a time to use our knowledge what we've learned. But, unfortunately it's not that long. When we think our work become easy, then  half of our knowledge learned from school already become wrong. Anyway, we are in the era of studying ever life. )

 지식을 포함하여 모든 것은 조금씩 변화하고 있다. 그러나 우리는 이처럼 천천히 변화하는 상황에 대해서는 인식이 느리다. 우리가 관심을 가지고 주의를 기울이지 않는 한 우리는 이것을 쉽게 알아차리지 못한다. 매번 드는 생각이지만 게임의 룰이 바뀌었다. 우리 윗세대에서 통용되던 규칙, 힌트 등이 우리에게는 해당되지 않는다. 축적으로 인해 기술발전은 더욱 가속되어있는 상태이며, 역설적이게 진입장벽은 낮아지고 있다. 누구나 손쉽게 고급 지식을 얻을 수 있는 세상이 되었다. 규모의 사회가 되었으며 보다 촘촘한 네트워크의 사회가 되었다. 그러나 이 책에서 주장하듯 그 이면에는 규칙이 존재한다. 두려운 미지의 것이 아니라 즐겁게 탐험할 수 있는 대상이다. 단지 한발짝 내딛을 용기와 지속하여 걸어갈 수 있는 끈기가 필요하다. 

(Including knowledge, everything is slowly changing. But, We can't recognize circumstance which is transforming little by little. At least, without our attention We really really can't figure it out. Every time I think, the rule of game is changed. Our upper generation's rules, expedients, and lessons are not useful to us anymore. Because of accumulated, speed of innovation has been more accelerated and paradoxically, it lower the barrier to entry. Now the world became a open that everyone can easily get advanced knowledge. We live in more massive and dense network society. However, the book said there is the rule behind this phenomenon. It's not a scared unknown something, but undiscovered thing to exploring. The only thing we need is just a courage to one step forward and patient to keep walking.  )
